Not my normal read but…
A girl needs to try something different every now and then.
This gave me a whole lot of male on male romance which isn’t something would normally give a first look to, let alone a second. I didn’t know it was M/M until I started reading it. That was my own silly fault for not paying attention to the synopsis. But, whatever… I started it and I decided I needed to finish it.
Wolfsong by TJ Klune was a well written book but not my cup of tea. Nothing against TJ or his writing style, I just couldn’t connect to the love side of the story.
Am I going to get messy with this one? Yeah, I am. I hope no one takes offense.
First a word for the author…
Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.
Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road, the boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane.
Ox was seventeen when he found out the boy s secret, and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega.
Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his blood red eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces.
It s been three years since that fateful day and the boy is back. Except now he s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.
Let’s get messy…
I have a vagina so I have find it extremely difficult to connect to penis on penis love story. I am a straight female so I can’t connect to a vagina on vagina love story. Period. Point blank. If the main characters aren’t having any vagina on penis love story I tune out the love story completely and just mindlessly read the book.
With that being said, the story was intriguing on it’s own.
I enjoyed the inner dialogue with Ox at the beginning of the story because it brought out motherly emotions for me. My son has a learning disability and is cognitively delayed. You would never know it by looking at him or even talking to him for that matter. But his way of thinking is similar to Ox’s. There was a conversation Ox had with his mother which was very much like one I’ve had with my son.
“You’re going to make someone very happy someday. And I can’t wait to see it happen.”
Someone, my mother had said. Make someone very happy.
Not a her. But someone.
It’s such a simple statement that most people would get but not Ox, not my son. To them the world is black and white. Everything you say is concrete. Ox didn’t take it as a compliment, it hurt his feelings because he felt like he couldn’t make his mom happy. My son thought the same thing. Ox made my heart hurt because it made me feel like a shitty mom too. Like, “Why didn’t I pick up on more of my son’s clues?” “Why did it take me so long to get him help?” “How long did my son feel stupid, for less of a better term?”
Ox does end up becoming an amazing man who goes on to become man and surprises everyone. Much like my son who surprised me with how brilliant he is in taekwondo.
Ox meets Joe when he is 16 years old and Joe is 10 years old. They develop a strong friendship that eventually leads into a relationship.
It’s kind of difficult for me to write about their romantic relationship because if I’m being honest, I don’t care. They are nothing more than two name in a book.
Although I couldn’t connect with Ox or Joe, I can say that they had a crazy connection and loved each other fiercely. The way they fought for their love was so sweet. I rooted for them every step of the way.
There was a couple I could connect to which was Thomas and Elizabeth. They were shape shifting werewolves. Thomas was the Alpha in his pack that includes, Elizabeth his wife, Kelly, Carter and Joe, his sons and Mark, his brother-in-law.
Rico was my absolute favorite character! He said the funniest shit…
“And here comes the part where really attractive people get naked,” Rico said. “And most of them are related. Which isn’t weird. At all.”
Everyone has to get naked before they shift into their wolf and Rico didn’t like it one bit. It’s pretty funny.
But here’s my thing at the end of the day…
I enjoy love stories that I can connect with and I didn’t get that here. But… this was an okay read and I might have liked it more if I was in the mood for anything other than romance. No matter what type of book I’m reading, I could do without the touching dick, slapping bits in the sex scenes. Personal preference. LOL!!!!!
Would I recommend this book? It depends on the person.
Am I glad I read it? No, my life would have went on very well without it.
Do I regret reading it? No, I’m not big on regrets.
Do I wish I would have paid more attention to the synopsis and the fact that it is a M/M romance? Yes! That’s for damn sure. I could have been reading something else that I would have enjoyed.
Let me get nice and pretty again and clean up my mess. Until next time. TTYL!
