Why I Haven’t Read Romance Novels. . .

Share:

So here I am.

It’s been almost six months since I last read a romance novel. For a long time, I couldn’t understand what was going on in my brain. What was making me disconnect from a genre of books I once loved so much?

Social media.

Yep, I said it. I’m blaming social media. Not in the way most do.

I’m blaming my relationship with social media and the book community.

Why, you might ask?

Well, if I’m being 100% honest, I stopped liking a lot of authors.

Reading post from authors complaining about readers and bloggers had me scratching my head. So many spoke ill of what readers would say about their books on their blogs, Goodreads, or whatever and call them out in their private groups. I can guarantee you that wouldn’t say that shit to the person if they were in their face.

If you see me just know that I know what the fuck you said and I want you to keep that same energy you had in your private group – say what you said before to my fucking face.

I’m just like,

“Bitch, you work in the entertainment business! Get the fuck over yourself.”

Now, let me tell you another reason. . .

These racist authors starting showing their true colors whether it was in their books or social media post. Being a black woman, I have a zero tolerance for bigoted assholes.

These racist bastards often were friends with authors I admired or enjoyed their work. So of course I had to stop reading there shit too. I don’t know about you but I believe birds of a feather, flock together. If you’re an author who supports racist pieces of shit, well bitch, I don’t fuck with you either.

I see you over there taking pictures with raggedy, butt face, bigot.

Yeah, I see you.

Now let’s talk about disloyalty. Being that I’ve been pretty active in the book community for a quite a few years, I’ve gotten to know which author run in the same circle and which ones stay to themselves. I pick up on things very, very well. It became obvious to me when authors would start to drift apart. I don’t know the reasons because that’s none of my damn business. What I don’t like was seeing ex-friends bad mouth each other online. Keep that shit to yourselves! I hate a gossiping ass bitch who tells on her old friends.

Side note – her boobs look amazing. She makes me wish I would have told my doctor to go bigger. JS.

Look, I have KDP Rocket, which allows me to see how much money authors make on Amazon in the United States. Before you judge me, know that I don’t make it a habit of looking. I barely use it for that purpose because there are more features than just knowing how much people are selling. We also have quite a few that make over one hundred thousand a month. On release day, loads of authors make up to twenty grand that day or more. And, remember that is only in the US.

Knowing that, I get pissed the fuck off when author talk shit about bloggers who want to monetize their platform. I mean shit, we’re the ones helping them bring that money in. If it wasn’t for readers and bloggers, authors wouldn’t make much at all. Granted, I don’t charge for my services because that’s not the route I choose to go at the moment but I completely understand those who do. I support it one hundred percent.

It takes a lot of time and skill to produce quality blog post.

Some of y’all favorite authors are selfish bitches.

Yep, I said it.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a handful of authors who I have gotten to know and I adore them with every part of my being. But let us be real. . . that’s only maybe five authors out of the over hundred I’ve directly communicated with.

I’m not gonna name any names in this blog post but I do have a podcast episode coming where I go IN on the racist ones.

I’ll end this post with my personal opinion – the books I’ve read this year has not been it. I’d say a good 94% of the romance books in 2019 have been regurgitated versions of the books we’ve read over the last three years. I haven’t been impressed at all with many romance authors. Let’s hope 2020 is going to be better.

I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

I completely forgot to add – rape and pedophilia have nothing to do with romance. I just feel like there was someone out there who needed to hear that.

Remember to follow all things messy. . .

Hey there! I'm Danielle! I just a girl who loves books. I love books so much that I talk about the stories like they are real. Who knows? Maybe, they are real to me. I do love the book world, it's way better than reality. . .sometimes. . .because. . .I'm also a proud mama bear, wife, and mother!

    1. I can’t wait to post it next week. I think many of these authors need to back away from social media for a bit.

    1. Yes! I love the way you put that! I’m going to have to use that one day. I used to monetize but it got to the point where it started to feel like I a job and ended up taking away from the enjoyment of books and reading. People were asking for too much but weren’t putting up enough coins for what they wanted. Folks wanted me to give them 4-5 STAR reviews for a 2 STAR book and that wasn’t happening. I have a few things in the works starting March 2020 that will provide revenue. I do wish more bloggers would fight for their worth.

    1. Hey Kristina!!!!!!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Same to you ♥️ I’m looking forward to 2020. I’m thinking it’s going to be fantastic year.

  1. I love this post and how real you are about your feelings and about books (: I too stop reading some “so call romance books” because of the whole “is romance when it isn’t” . Is hard finding romance that isn’t about those things you wrote in your post but let’s hope 2020 is better (:

    1. Thank you so, so much!!! ♥️ I don’t know what’s been going on in the world of romance for 2019. If 2020 doesn’t get better, I’m going to give up 🤦🏾‍♀️🤣

  2. This post gets all of my heart eye emoji’s. It’s starting to get real exhausting finding out how many trash authors there are out there. My Do Not Buy list keeps getting longer and longer and I’m over it. 2020 for me is for doing better with what I choose to read. I’m not trying to read any authors that even hint at being part of the things you’ve listed here in this blog post.

I’m also ready for your podcast on this one. I’m a subscriber so I’ll be on the look out. Keep up the good work in the new year. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Rowena! It’s been an interesting year in books and authors. I’m glad so many have shown their true colors so I know not to give them my hard earned coins.

  3. I heard that. I never thought that I’d have to do a background check on authors before purchasing a book that I’m interested in reading but in 2020, I’m going to be faithfully checking out authors before I buy books. In these troubled times, it’s necessary.

    1. Isn’t that the truth! I might create a page dedicated to stupid shit authors have done. 😂
