The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫3.5 STARS💫⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was almost a 4 STAR read, then it became 3 STARS, after awhile it redeemed itself slightly to a 3.5 STAR book. Let me tell you all about it.

I’ve been a little bit emotional this last week. I had a bunch of stuff going on in life and I needed a light, enjoyable read. I’m not a big fan of romantic comedy  books, but I figured, why not, considering my current state. That’s how I ended up reading, The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie.

I’m going to get a bit messy with this one, but not too much. I’m going to throw in some random thoughts here and there too. It’s just me. Please try to keep in mind that I am not a writer and I have ADHD so my review may seem all over the place. Again, that’s just me.

Let’s start with a word from the author…

Synopsis

According to the law of attraction, women and men can’t be friends.

Contrary to this myth, my friendship with Coriander Phillips does not rest on unrequited love or un-actualized lust. We’ve been inseparable since the day I pulled one of her pigtails and she punched me in the gut.

She’s hilarious, fun to hang out with. Together, we’re like peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and meatballs, wings and beer. A match made in heaven.

She’s the bomb.

Did I mention she’s smokin’ hot? I’ve checked her out…maybe once or twice. Hey, I’m a guy.
Seriously, no awkwardness, no secret yearning for our relationship to escalate beyond the purely platonic. I’m the boy friend—the loyal shoulder she cries on, the dispenser of coffee, sympathy, hugs, advice, and affection with no expectations.

Until the invisible line between friends and lovers became blurry.

Now I want more. I want her.All I have to do is convince her we can be more than friends.

Right?

If only it were that easy.

*******************************************************************

I may not be the best mother in the world but I am the best for my kids. If there is one thing I want to teach them is NEVER to let someone treat you as an option. My review will tie into this.

This book is told completely from Dean’s point of view and is the perfect example of how much of an idiot men can be. Now, I’m not saying I don’t like Dean because I do. He’s funny, charismatic, charming, and a pretty nice guy. I just can’t rock with some of his ways as far as his outlook on women. As a friend – he’s great. As a boyfriend – not so much. That’s one of the cutest things about this book, really. What he is great at is being an impressive boy friend.

Dean is a self appointed asshole and makes no apologies for it, and I can respect that. He’s fucked a million and one women and gives no fucks about it. He wealthy, but not flashy with his money, in fact, it’s downplayed in the book. I appreciated that from the author.

Coriander, AKA Cori, is stunning, sweet, caring and the perfect girl friend for Dean. They have known each other for 20 years. They’re BFF’s although being the manly man Dean is, he hates using that term to describe himself. Cori knows everything about Dean, including his lack of desire to be in a relationship, to get married and/or to have children. She understands that he wants to be a bachelor for the rest of his life and supports him and his choices. I liked Cori for the most part because she never let herself become anyone’s doormat. We couldn’t be friends in real life, but we’ll get to that later.

Side note: My kids are biracial, as is Coriander. I’m African American and their father is a white Scottish man (green-card chaser. JK 🙂 ) The author makes a very valid point. Here…

As much as society attempts to label her, she never picks a box. In her view, that would be choosing one parent over another and disregarding the fact she’s a fluid product of may influences, like all of us. – Dean

Can other please understand this fact? Don’t make folks choose, it’s not fair. Ok, back to my review.

Here’s the good part about reading a book entirely from the males POV, you realize just how clueless they really are. I don’t even know how I forget this fact, given that I’m married to a part-time idiot, but whatever. Dean has no intentions to hurt anyone, but because he’s a guy he ends up hurting a few people along the way. Mostly Cori. God, does he do some of the stupidest things in the world. Bless his heart. He really is a lovable guy, though.

“Dean Conrad Morello, ending our friendship is not impossible. However, if I ever cut all ties with you, it will be because you hand me the scissors, not because of a man. Do you get that.? – Cori

Right! Preach, girl, preach!

One thing that I did love about Cori was the fact that she knew her worth – even though she frustrated me a few times when she forgot how important she was. Sometimes I wanted to jump into the book and shake her, reminding her that it’s not only Dean who is important but you are too. But everywoman does something stupid for a man every once and awhile. I know I have.

Of course we all know how the story was going to go, but reading how they got to the HEA was fun. Even more so when they start blurring that invisible friendship line. I was surprised how the author wrote their hook-up. She gave Cori strength and Dean the ability to be more humble.

Cori’s strength helped her recognize that she knew this man, she knew Dean, she knew he was a player, she knew he wouldn’t commit to her. When she noticed that he wouldn’t give her what she deserves, she put herself first and walked away with her head held high. That’s how you do it, ladies.

While Dean made Cori an option, she became her own priority – just like it should be. It took her wayyyyyyy to long to remember that.

Something tells me Coriander and I have just become strangers who know each other too well. – Dean

Okay, so I need to tell y’all. . . Dean pulls this stunt that would have had me slashing his tires and pouring bleach on all of his clothes. Oh, I’m a crazy bitch and you do not want to fuck with me. I can get real petty. I don’t like to, but I can and will if needs be. I have a sweet face but don’t let that fool you. If he would have done that with me. . . y’all might as well have my bail money and lawyer ready.

This little stunt is where we went from 4 STARS down to 3 STARS real quick. I’m not going to tell you what it is, you have to read the book for yourself. It’s juicy, though.

Can Dean my book boyfriend? Absolutely not. He plays too much for me. He would get hurt fucking with me. With that being said, does he deserve to be someone else’s book boyfriend? He does. Deep down, he is a really good person.

But when Dean and Cori were good, they were great.

I’m going to go back to what I was saying earlier about Cori not being my friend in the real world. She’s just too green for me. I loved her in this book and for Dean because they made sense. I need to connect with the females in my books and I did connect with Cori, but she was way to sweet to be my friend – I would corrupt her. So, you see, it wasn’t for a bad reason, just a fact.

This book is a fun and entertaining read seeing how someone can go from the boy friend to the boyfriend.

Can men and women really just be friends? For me, it just depends on what he looks like and his personality. If he’s funny looking, then yes, we can be friends because I have no desire to fuck you. If he’s sexy, maybe after we’ve already slept together we could be friends because we got that part out of the way. Seriously, yes, I do think men and women can be just friends.

Here’s my recommendation for The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie. . . Yes, read it! If you want a book that you can have a little fun with then you should pick it up. It’s funny, sweet and flows beautifully. BTW, it’s free on Kindle Unlimited 🙂

That wasn’t too messy.

TTYL, lovers!

Oh, wait! Let me post the link to a video of what song that popped in my head when I was reading this book. Cori proved this to be true.

  1. I don’t appreciate you increasing my tbr petty betty. This book sounds like a quick and fun read though. I will ask again, why do these authors keep making the men hoes and the women these docile, dainty creatures? Sam Hunt is fine and I am going to add him to my boo list so thanks for that as well!

    1. Thanks chica! I am 100% over this poor, pity me females characters phase. Let’s be real, women are having just as much sex if not more than men. I miss reading about strong women who put men in their place.
